ABOUT JURY DUTY IN GERMANY

Your Role as a Juror

You play a vital role in Germany's justice system. You'll listen to evidence and help determine the facts of the case. Your participation ensures that justice is administered by peers from the community.

Selection Process

Jurors are randomly selected from the population registry. You'll receive an official summons with details about your service. The selection aims to create a diverse jury that represents our society.

Compensation & Support

Jurors receive compensation for their service and expenses. Employers are required to grant time off for jury duty. The court provides orientation and support throughout the process.

Trial Process

Most jury service lasts 1-2 weeks. You'll hear evidence, receive instructions from the judge, deliberate with fellow jurors, and help reach a verdict based solely on the evidence presented in court.

Eligibility

German citizens aged 18-70 are generally eligible. Certain professionals may be exempt. Those with severe health issues or language barriers may also be excused.

Confidentiality

Jurors must maintain strict confidentiality about deliberations and must not discuss the case outside the jury room until the trial concludes.

IMPORTANCE OF JURY DUTY

Democratic Participation

Jury duty is a fundamental civic responsibility that allows citizens to participate directly in the administration of justice, ensuring the legal system remains accountable to the people.

Community Representation

Jurors bring diverse perspectives from the community into the courtroom, helping to balance legal expertise with community values and common sense.

Public Trust

Citizen participation in trials helps maintain public confidence in the justice system by ensuring decisions are made by peers rather than solely by legal professionals.
